Practical Tips for April 11

Make the most of your day — especially important on busy Parade Day!

🎉

Parade Day Planning

Constitution Ave will be closed 11 AM–1:30 PM. Plan your route around this. Arrive at parade viewing spots by 10:30 AM for a good free street-side position.

👟

Wear Comfortable Shoes

The National Mall is 2 miles long. On parade day you'll easily walk 6–9 miles. Comfortable, broken-in shoes are essential — no new sneakers!

🌡️

April Weather: Layer Up

April in DC averages 45–68°F. Mornings can be cool, afternoons warm. Bring a light jacket you can remove. Rain is possible — a small umbrella is smart.

💧

Bring a Water Bottle

Water fountains are available throughout the Mall and in all Smithsonian museums. Staying hydrated is key for a full day of walking.

📱

Download the NPS App

The National Park Service app has offline maps, ranger programs, and info for every monument. Free to download — a must-have for the day.

🎟️

Book Passes in Advance

Air & Space Museum and NMAAHC require free timed-entry passes. Book at si.edu as early as possible — they fill up fast on parade weekend.

🍔

Food on Parade Day

Expect long lines near the parade route. Plan lunch after 1:30 PM when crowds thin. Food trucks on the Mall and Penn Quarter neighborhood are your best bets.

🚇

Getting Around the Mall

Metro is your best friend on parade day — roads will be closed. Stations: Smithsonian (Orange/Blue/Silver), Archives (Yellow/Green), L'Enfant Plaza.

📸

Best Photo Spots

Tidal Basin at 8 AM with blossoms, Lincoln Memorial steps looking east, Jefferson Memorial from across the basin, parade floats on Constitution Ave, monuments at golden hour (6–7 PM).

🎒

Security at Museums

All Smithsonian museums have security screening. Allow extra time at entry — parade day will bring extra visitors to the museums.

🏧

ATMs & Cash

Most museums are cashless. ATMs are available near the Smithsonian Metro station and in most museum lobbies.

🚻

Restrooms

Free public restrooms at the Washington Monument, Smithsonian Castle, and inside all museums. Portable restrooms are set up along Constitution Ave on parade day.
